东晋教学者，著名炼丹家、医药学家葛洪在《抱朴子内篇》中说：“欲要长生，肠要长清。”

八仙中的纯阳祖师吕祖说：“欲要长生，腹中常清，欲要不死，肠无渣滓。”道家倡导修仙成道，追求不食人间烟火，餐风饮露。

道家认为，人食五谷杂粮，会在肠中积结成粪，产生秽气，阻碍成仙的道路。为此道士们纷纷模仿《庄子·逍遥游》所描写的“不食五谷，吸风饮露”的仙人行径，试图达到不死的目的。

一个人想要长生，长寿，最简单的的做法就是清理我们自己的肠道。

在古籍中，有很多关于辟谷的奇人异事。道家的辟谷是最具说服力的，比如1314年，张三丰67岁时在全真道祖庭所在地——陕西终南山，闭关辟谷三年。

中国古代最长寿的皇帝——乾隆，既修佛法，也修道家方法，道家用的最多的修炼方法就是辟谷养生，并且在晚年时，一顿只吃一道菜。

辟谷的修炼，对治疗疾病、强身健体、开慧长功、激发潜能都有相当好的效果。
